More industry combativeness surrounds the November releases of EAs Battlefield 3 and Activisions Call of Duty 3, and the competition between developers has never been more deeply rooted. The newest comments presented by an EA spokesperson, Jeff Brown, marks EAs distinct goal of dethroning the Call of Duty franchise from the military shooter category,

Last year Activision had a 90 share in the shooter category. This year,Battlefield 3 is going to take you down to 60 or 70. At that rate, you'll be out of the category in 2-3 years. If you don't believe me, go to the store and try to buy a copy ofGuitar Hero orTony Hawk.

It is not a surprising move by EA to make such remarks towards the largest competitor, as Battlefield 3 has been poised as a serious threat to Activision from the beginning. EAs Jeff Brown draws attention to popular games of the past that have been bumped out of their dominant roles in the gaming industry and Call of Duty 3 has a huge bulls eye attached to it, while Battlefield 3 lines up the crosshairs for the kill shot. Competition drives the gaming industry, as it does with is the business world, and November 2011 marks the heavyweight title fight between EA and Activision.

The battle comes down to popularity, which for game developers comes down to the numbers. Activision celebrated a previous 90% share in the shooter category, which means that Call of Duty made up 9/10ths of shooter games sold. This year, however, EA hopes to downgrade this rating with Battlefield 3, and judging by the hype surround this game, they have a good shot of accomplishing their goal.

What does this mean for gamers? Well, first and foremost, it denotes that both Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty 3 will be relentlessly flawless in their respective game play, and new features. Competition makes companies produce better products, and as gamers, we are now poised to reap the benefits that result from EA and Activisions open combat. It is a win for the future of gaming and gamers not matter the outcome or share holdings of either company after the November releases.
