Five Levels in GTA: Vice City That Solidified Tommy's Legacy

GTA Vice City was released more than two decades ago and people still sing praises about it. The game was groundbreaking for its time and still holds up. Plus, it has been remastered for current gen consoles and smart phones, which goes to show how much people love to revisit this Vice City.

There were several things that made GTA: Vice City great, like its Scarface inspired story, late 80s and 90s aesthetic, gameplay mechanics and more. However, one thing that made the game a true classic was its protagonist Tommy Vercetti, voiced by the late great Ray Liotta. During the course of this game, Tommy finds himself in several difficult situations and the way he handles them truly solidified his legacy as one of the GTA franchise’s best protagonists. Below, we will discuss five levels where Tommy proved that he could more than hold his own in Vice City’s crime ridden world.

Demolition Man

Most people who have played GTA: Vice City will claim that the mission titled “Demolition Man” is arguably the most difficult one in the game. There are several elements at play here, as Tommy has to plant multiple bombs inside a construction site within an incredibly short time limit using a remote controlled helicopter. It really doesn’t get more difficult than that.

However, that is not all, you also have to deal with angry security guards inside the construction area to make sure they don’t destroy your helicopter. Tommy proves his skill and resilience in this mission, planting all 4 bombs within the short time limit, leaving unscathed.

Naval Engagement

If you had any doubts on Tommy’s abilities to handle stuff, Naval Engagement will clear them up. What makes this mission so challenging is that it requires Tommy to do multiple things simultaneously, like taking out the Haitian gang, getting his hands on cocaine while giving the contraband back to Umberto. It’s honestly a lot and it wouldn’t be surprising if you had to play this mission multiple times. Tommy stays resolute after being set up for an ambush and kills the Haitians, proving that he is no slouch and can stand toe to toe with the very best.

G-Spotlight

This mission puts Tommy’s driving skills to the test, requiring him to jump over several buildings while riding his motorcycle. You need to get every single jump right to clear this mission, otherwise Tommy needs to start again. Players need to achieve just the right speed, timing and accuracy for this mission, which may seem almost impossible initially. However, with enough tries, you should be able to complete this mission, which gives you an incredibly showcase of Tommy’s abilities and bravery.

Keep Your Friends Close

It wouldn’t be a far stretch to say that the mission titled “ Keep your Friends Close” is the perfect homage to the timeless classic film Scarface, starring the Godfather himself, Al Pacino. Here, Tommy finds himself in an intense shootout inside a mansion that is full of mafiosos and guards armed to the teeth. Tommy must shoot the enemy and navigate his way out of the mansion, which he eventually does.

Like most missions in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, this one also requires multiple tries but what makes this specific level stand out is the protagonists ability to survive after being set up, lied to, betrayed and any number of negative things.

The Ending

Almost every single mission in GTA: Vice City puts Tommy Vercetti’s character to the test and he overcomes every obstacle with you, the player’s help. The end of this game sees Tommy and Ken being the sole survivors in the Versetti mansion after surviving an onslaught of enemies, bullets and setups. When this game first came out, people were hoping that Tommy would continue to be the franchise’s face but Rockstar Studios had other plans and luckily, they didn’t disappoint.
